Turion morphological responses to water nutrient concentrations and plant density in the submerged macrophyte Potamogeton crispus

چکیده
Asexual propagules are the dominant means of propagation in most submerged macrophytes. To improve the understanding of how water nutrient concentrations and population density influence the turion production of Potamogeton crispus L., the turions were planted in mesocosms with three water nutrient conditions (ambient lake water, high P and high N) and two plant density levels (4 and 15 turions m(-2)). After a 9-month experiment, the +P in the water column significantly increased the total turion number per plant under both of the plant density treatments. However, the +N in the water column did not affect the turion number per plant under low plant density. The +P in the water and high plant density significantly reduced the turion individual biomass. An examination of 3210 turion individuals from all treatments revealed that the increased water nutrient concentrations and plant density impacted the turion size by producing different stem diameters of individual turions. Most of the scale leaf morphological traits of the turions were significantly increased under higher water nutrients, but these traits were similar between the different plant density treatments. These results demonstrate that the water P concentration interacts with plant density, affecting both the production and traits of turions.

Differences in the regeneration traits of Potamogeton crispus turions from macrophyte- and phytoplankton-dominated lakes.
Potamogeton crispus is widely used in submerged macrophyte restoration in China. Turions are an important means of reproduction in this species. To compare the regeneration abilities of P. crispus turions in macrophyte- and phytoplankton-dominated lakes, we collected P. crispus turions from a macrophyte-dominated lake (Liangzi Lake) and a phytoplankton-dominated lake (Taihu Lake). Both lakes ar...

Turions are frost resistant, vegetative dormant organs produced by aquatic plants. Tissue N, P, K, Ca, and Mg content was estimated in turions of 5 rooting, non-carnivorous plant species of the genera Caldesia, Hydrocharis, and Potamogeton and in 7 rootless carnivorous plant species of the genera Aldrovanda and Utricularia, and compared with concentrations of these nutrients in ambient waters e...
متن کاملPysiological effects of NaCl on Ceratophyllum demersum L., a submerged rootless aquatic macrophyte
In the present study, effects of NaCl concentrations (0, 20, 40 and 80 mM) were investigated in Ceratophyllum demersum. Macronutrients N, P and K and micronutrients Zn and Cu were significantly decreased by NaCl salinity. In general, however, Fe and Mn accumulation showed to increase. As a results, NaCl toxicity disturbed the uptake and translocation of macro and micronutrients in the macrophyt...
متن کاملChanges in propagule formation and plant growth in Potamogeton crispus induced by exogenous application of gibberellic acid (GA3) and 6-benzyladenine (6-BA)
Submerged aquatic macrophytes such as Potamogeton crispus can absorb large quantities of nutrients from sediment and water, and therefore mitigate pollution and improve water quality of polluted lakes. Turions are the main propagules of P. crispus; their formation is an important process in the life cycle of the plant and relates closely to the population dynamics of the species in lakes. The c...
متن کاملInvasive Macrophytes Control the Spatial and Temporal Patterns of Temperature and Dissolved Oxygen in a Shallow Lake: A Proposed Feedback Mechanism of Macrophyte Loss
Submerged macrophytes can have a profound effect on shallow lake ecosystems through their ability to modify the thermal structure and dissolved oxygen levels within the lake. Invasive macrophytes, in particular, can grow rapidly and induce thermal gradients in lakes that may substantially change the ecosystem structure and challenge the survival of aquatic organisms. We performed fine-scale mea...
